Finally: A Sonnet

As I watch the flowers bloom in the spring,

Time passes through their life as it does in my own.

Ivy grows to the brick of which they cling,

Cascading above our church’s cornerstone.

The sun, it coats me, the head on my back,

Like the arm round my shoulder, warm and dense.

There’s sweat on his brow - a feeling I lack,

He turns, he smiles, I feel my chest tense.

On the bench we sit, I grip to the seat,

I know what this is, it answers my fears.

He kneels to the ground, I feel my heart beat,

Taking my hands, in my eyes I feel tears.

So unexpected this choice, you deserve to know,

My feelings aren’t mutual, the answer is no.
